texte = What is the chance of getting some kind of a "runtime engine" version of webdna some time next year (2009) so we can finally package and sell our solutions to end users at competitive prices? Basically I'm thinking of a scenario like this: I have a webdna app I'd like to sell to others but they don't have a server installed on their desktop machine and they won't buy a full copy of webdna separately from me simply just to use my app. But if I can put a free server and webdna and my app onto a CD, then maybe they can run my app directly off the CD, or they can install it on their hard drive and get even better performance. It's been about a decade now that I've wished for this. PSC never did it and of course SmithMicro never did it, so now that the ball has changed hands again I'm just wondering if WSC is going to do it ... and if so when? Some desktop database programs create their own "runtime versions" that package a restricted version of their engines with the app such that the engine is used only with that app. That's the kind of thing I'm talking about. Usually the database programs that offer this capability cost the programmer more money upfront for the version that create these runtime engines. But the distribution of runtime engines integrated with the programmer's app is free, and this makes the software licensing cost affordable to end users. I've built lots of webdna solutions but I would have to put them online and sell subscriptions to make any money off them -- and they would become more complicated and less secure that way too. But to be able to sell a self-contained package that the user can run on his own desktop computer, without any usernames or passwords, and without having to be online, and with the ability to use his favorite web browser interface ... it just makes the whole picture a whole lot brighter and more attractive. Sincerely, Ken Grome Associated Messages, from the most recent to the oldest:
