Before plunking >down $$ on server software, I just wanted feedback on WebTen vs. WebStar. From the information I've been reading on the WebTen list:Good points: 1- WebTen is LOTS faster than WebSTAR at serving static html pages. 2- WebTen can handle multiple certificates. 3- WebTen can run the WebCat plugin with both SSL and non-SSL services. 4- WebTen has built-in FTP, DNS, etc., and they all work well.Bad points: 1- WebTen may actually be slower than WebSTAR when WebCatalog is processing the pages. 2- WebTen requires a LOT more memory *AND* hard drive space than WebSTAR. 3- Some WebTen users experience frequent crashes requiring full re-installs before getting up and running again, only to have to repeat another reinstall at the next crash -- which may be only a few hours away. WebTen users have correlated these problems with WebCat and possibly other plugins. There's also an apparent problem with another PCS software product called SiteEdit Pro:We have noticed a direct correllation between siteeditpro use and webten crashing. We have weaned almost everyone off of it and into ftp and now webten barely ever crashes. When it does we can look and see that siteeditpro was being used or had just been used. >Is WebTen stable enough for ecommerce with clients >jittery about any downtime?Until some of these strange and as-yet-unresolved instability and crashing problems with WebTen and WebCat are resolved, I would not switch to WebTen. However, keep in mind that these problems may simply be the result of improper installations or administration by inexperienced WebTen users, which means you may have excellent results with WebTen.Just a few days ago, Tenon asked me to start running WebTen instead of WebSTAR. They are sending me a copy so I can begin testing and running it myself. I expect to begin later this week. Maybe after I've looked at it myself, I will be able to come up with some answers to these problems. We shall see ... :)Sincerely, Ken Grome 808-737-6499 WebDNA Solutions mailto:ken@webdna.net http://www.webdna.net Associated Messages, from the most recent to the oldest:
