WebDNA needs to be installed, but from what I recall, this a fairly easy process. However, one needs the ability to install such software on the server. Not all hosting allows that and it certainly is not a basic hosting feature. It is more a dedicated server or colocation option unless you use one of the WebDNA hosts that are around. However, once the underlying software is installed, the scripts can be uploaded and run without additional configuration on either PHP or WebDNA. I think the truth is that from the non-programmer perspective, what difference does it make to run WebDNA over PHP? PHP offers many off-the-shelf and free scripts for stores, forums and other web applications that WebDNA lacks. If you never touch that code, it is hard to beat PHP on price or availability. >From a programmers perspective, WebDNA is great for custom applications due to the easy to read syntax and built in database handling. If there will be a lot of customization, then WebDNA makes up its price quickly. -----Original Message----- From: Kenneth Grome Sent: Thu, 14 Apr 2005 12:16:32 +0800 To: "WebDNA Talk" Subject: Automatic installation of WebDNA by hosting clients? There are tons of scripts available in PHP and MySQL that can easily be installed by individual hosting clients. This makes some very polished and professional scripts work "out of the box" immediately after the client installs the software. I would like to be able to tell a client that he can just as easily install WebDNA into his folder hierarchy on the server, and then he can immediately begin using WebDNA. Unfortunately I don't think SmithMicro has ever developed a version that auto-installs as soon as it is uploaded to the server. Or have they? The bottom line here is that I need a way to convince my client to use WebDNA, but he doesn't want to go for it unless I can tell him that he can install it himself, EASILY, on nearly any hosting service he decides to use in the future -- or that his hosting service can install it easily with virtually no configuration requirements. Please comment if you have a suggestion, otherwise I'll have to tell him to use PHP and MySQL instead of WebDNA ... not a new thing to recommend to clients like this of course, but I get really frustrated to see so little attention being paid to things like this -- which are very important to our ability to help SMSI sell their software.
