I'd shy away from cold-calling (or the e-mail equivalent) people who abandoned their carts. If you are seeing a lot of these abandoned carts (and you cannot match up the data to an eventual completed order), I think you should use a survey of all users (well, a random selection thereof); offer them a discount or free shipping instead of a prize draw (it's a cheap way to get valuable info and the user is guaranteed of getting something rather than just a chance at something). One thing to emphasize to the marketing suits is that these are not "lost sales" in the same sense as someone who goes into an auto dealership and spends some time talking with the sales rep then walks away. There are lots of reasons that someone might abandon a cart that have nothing to do with your site per se (they are running Windows 95 and had to reboot because the spyware was making the machine too slow to use ;-). Don't read too much into it unless the abandoned carts are a significant percentage of your traffic.
