We have two=20 in-house developers (not including me). We've been limping along with=20 4.5 for Windows for more years than I care to remember, on a 433MHz=20 desktop machine (running NT), and we gross over $750,000/year in direct= =20 sales on sites that are primarily a marketing tool, not a profit center. I don't know what is going on with SmithMicro and I don't know why 6.1= =20 has been delayed for so long. At this point, however, I also don't=20 care. We have made a significant investment in WebCatalog, both in the= =20 Enterprise license and more importantly in the development of our sites,= =20 and it has paid for itself *many* times over. We aren't moving away=20 from WebCat any time soon. I am also somewhere between Hacker and Guru in the "Seven Stages of a=20 Perl Programmer": http://jwenet.net/notebook/2005/1075.html and I know that a general purpose language like Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby,= =20 etc, will never approach the ease of use a specialized eCommerce package= =20 like WebDNA =5Ffor=5Fecommerce=5Fsites=5F. I've written (and recently re= written=20 using Mason[1]) a specialized site under Perl (a reports website for our= =20 publishers using browser client certs for authentication and=20 authorization). I'm interested in Ruby-on-Rails[2], Catalyst[3], and=20 other MVC[4] frameworks. I'm always open to using the best tools=20 available. For our primary sites, that is still WebCatalog.
