Then I suppose I could change the ! to an =, so it would kick in for empty referrers? Either way, it's a step in the right direction. Although I really don't mind if a site is hotlinking to one or two of my images (free advertising), I take exception to them using dozens to populate an entire section. In this case, a specially crafted (friendly) image showing a sample of what I offer with the website clearly indicated would be pretty cool, and would discourage them from using more than one image. I could even change the image periodically. All this htaccess stuff is sounding a lot like what WebStar offered, or was it a plugin to WebStar? But it all started to break after a while and was denying too many legitimate users who were setting their browsers to some privacy setting that didn't send the headers, so I quit using it altogether. (maybe that's what the first line above is all about.) Then I just quit using Webstar. I liked this referrer system, because it meant I could offer up samples in the free pages from the same directories. Actually maybe I don't want directory protection after all if this would work without screwing up the users just mentioned.
