A simple database with two fields, sku and name, would suffice. Then either leave the name blank if the picture doesn't exist or place the dummy.gif name in the field. In the first case you could use the [hide]/[show] contexts to determine whether to show the dummy gif or the named gif.Obviously it would be nice to have this happen automatically, however, the time hit to search for images could be quite a bit.
