I am eager to second the concept of using the Amazon Cloudfront to off-load bandwidth. I implemented that as a solution across a few of my biggest DNA sites as well as across 4 Vbulletin forums. I am not sure of the combined traffic but it was somewhere in the area of 65 million page views a year. Since implementing at AWS we have transferred roughly: So far: 25.692 Gigs transferred 5,325,736 Requests for files. Not bad for 8 days ;-) So far its been a dream (mostly). Little bit clunky when the client replaces images and doesnt want to wait the 12hrs for the normal cycle. But there is a tool for that. With the DNA, I chose to make a site-wide function to switch between the home domain and the AWS domain. So I can come off the cloud across the entire site with one quick mod. I did that in case I ran into a snag along the way and had to punt. Oh yeah the cost for all that traffic... A little over $7 so far :-) Yep... No hidden fees and no setup fees. But beyond the value in price or the reduction in bandwidth, we have seen tremendous increases in performance of the sites. I am serving all images (no matter how small), all video files and all javascripts through the cloud. So on top of the saving in bandwidth (which is exceptional) I have reduced my simultaneous connections down to 1/4-1/6th of normal. This in turn is making everything much much snappier. Anyway... Just wanted to throw an update with what is working. If that changes I will be sure to post it. God I wish I heard about this sooner :-) Alex On 7/19/11 8:53 PM, "Alex McCombie" wrote: > Hey everyone, > Basically I am trying to cost out a redundant setup for what I have > here. > Moderate DNA traffic and I am looking to figure out a cost effective way to > either off-site some DNA sites or serve the DNA from my servers and just > call images from a provider with a bigger pipe. > > I am inclined to start with the image serving route.
