If you place [lastautonumber] within the append, it will return the number before the autonumber just genereated by the append. [lastautonumber] is valid but to get the last number genereated and it you need to place it after the append which presents the possibility of not returning the correct autonumber you are expecting if the database base is clocking a lot of appends.
