Hello Everyone,

I want to say a couple things (informally) this Friday about WebDNA. We (WSC) had our annual shareholders meeting this April and the shareholders have graciously entrusted me to be the decision maker this year. Imagine that, a lowly WebDNA'er from the late 90's, now in the lead seat! John Hill may/may not remember that he had to explain to me what a variable was at one point in time! Don't worry, I've learned a thing or two since that time. ;-)

Moving forward, We have a lot of good things planned for WebDNA. These "good things" derive from the talk list (you guys), from me, as a 15 year veteran WebDNA developer, and from input from the owners, which many are also long-time WebDNA developers. There is a lot to do to get WebDNA where it needs to be, which is in its rightful place alongside the bigger names in the industry.

Along with continuing with/improving the good work Christophe has done with the fastCGI app, We will also continue with supporting/evolving the CICADA (6.2) model. To develop a business plan this year, I did a lot of research into the current hosting options being offered on the market today, and it became very clear to me that we need to support both product types in order to fill this gamut of hosting options. The fastCGI app will work better in some environments / configurations, but the CICADA model will work better some other environments / configurations. We will make a more detailed public and formal announcement later, which will clarify things, but I wanted to let our core talk list members know about this today.

Regarding the new business plan, we will state a few things that we see as important for you guys to know now, but we will likely *not* respond to questions about the details at this point in time. There is a lot on the plate for WSC first, but as progress is made, more details will come out.

Commerce Tags and StoreBuilder:

WebDNA is getting back into its roots in the eCommerce game. This will be in the form of not only supporting the commerce tags, but improving them. It will also eventually include a *greatly improved* "Store Builder"... yes, the name is being changed back to its roots, to more accurately describe it's purpose in the marketplace.

RDBMSs and MySQL:

Though WebDNA has it's own great database system that works for 95% of the web projects out there, WebDNA will continue to improve and support interaction with MySQL and will also add support for PostGreSQL, when resources permit. It's important that we keep up support for the standards in our industry. It will also work to attract new WebDNA'ers who are more familiar with these databases.

Support for Windows:

I have hope, but not resolve for Windows users. WSC *has* begun work on support for the latest Windows users, however, it is not going to be in the immediate focus for 2012, unless WSC can find the extra funding / resources to make it happen. I had to make the difficult decision between creating an application that will be rock solid and attractive in our industry, or potentially sacrificing those characteristics by supporting Windows. Again, this was difficult for me personally because I know we have a lot of Windows users out there, including some of my personal customers. WSC is not shutting the door fully here, but I really wanted to provide accurate information for the windows developers so they can make knowledgeable decisions for their businesses. For 2012, WebDNA will focus strongly on standardizing for *nix (both debian and RPM based), Mac OSX, and maybe other *nix platforms.

WebDNA Engine:

As always, a never ending quest to make our language more elegant, faster, and more contemporary, is underway. One of the items in the plan is a complete contemporary rewrite of the language, with complete backwards compatibility!

Those are the things we can and want to share today. I will end my comments with a personal statement about WSC. WSC is a unique company. It is made up of owners where most are active WebDNA developers. Though this kind of company structure can sometimes beget passionate opinions and differences, it also has a lot of possibility and potential to really do some interesting things if those passions and opinions can come together. This year, WSC has shown great strides in joining together for the betterment of WebDNA. I am encouraged and look forward to making some good things happen.

If anyone has any questions, wants to get involved, or even has any criticism, feel free to email me directly. I may not be able to be specific at this time, but I will, at least, respond.

Sincerely,
Donovan
