Don't get me wrong, the spawn command is a real lifesaver. However, I'm currently waiting for the damn server to finish a spawned process, because spawned processes seem to get 100% CPU cycle time, and served pages get the shaft. I would really like the ability to set (or have preset) spawned processes to 25% duty cycle, and leave the processor open to serving webpages as speedy as possible. (I should mention that I am using webcat3, webstar3 on a Mac) Anyway, as I write this, I am sitting here waiting for a 30 minute process to finish (updating a database of 4000 items with 40 size fields per item out of a flat import file) Under a load of one to two additional surfers the webserver appears just plain slow (15 second delay to serve webcat processed pages) When I get 6 or 8 surfers the webserver starts spitting out Gateway timed out messages. Also, although I need to have autocommit databases on (I use a lot of tracking databases and catalog request and email databases on my websites) I think there should be a way to turn it off for the databases involved in a spawned processes. In the above example, I take the active database, copy it to a new directory, modify the copy, then if the process is completed successfully, I close the real database, replace it with the new, and open it. During the update, the server busily writes out the temp database to the hard drive (seemingly after every record) causing quite a delay while the update is taking place. Brian B.
