I haven't completed the development (I need to add some checks for expired certificates), but it is an interesting way to deal with it.I am actually using Perl and O'Reilly's WebSite, though the more recent IIS's also support client certs. My Perl code is actually creating the page on the fly, so that the client has access to their files only through my code (i.e. the files are not accessable from the web, except through my program). If you are interested in this sort of thing, you can also check out Thawte's StrongExtranet, where they manage the certificates and you only provide an authentication routine.
