We all but abandoned tracking people via cookies a year ago. The hassle of browser compatibility coupled with the irrational fear of cookies on the part of the public was too much. While clearly not as attractive, a cart based identification is 100% compatible with browsers. Whether you get them to signin via a fill out form for user & pass or you use a real authentication box, the cart adds value for you. Especially for 'guests' that don't sign in but you still want to track.
