The Unix epoch derives directly from UTC (Universal Coordicated Time) which is the internationally defined time standard. The (classic) MacOS used a completely bogus epoch of 1900-01-01 (floating timezone, which is useless); I would think that OS/X would use the Unix epoch (since it is really a Unix variant).
