I cannot think of situation offhand where a showif will show in this situation, but I can give you a simple example where the hideif will hide: [hideif something!=anything] this will hide because "something" is not equal to "=anything" which makes the comparison true [/hideif] .... so it seems that your conclusion needs a bit of adjustment.
