New users of WebDNA could really benefit from a tool like=20 this too since it eliminates the need to construct db=20 management tools from scratch. Some of you may say "This=20 kind of tool is not necessary with WebDNA because we can=20 just import our db files into our desktop database=20 programs." This is true, but it is also true that=20 beginners who have seldom (or never) created or managed a=20 database on the web will find it less intimidating and more=20 comforting to have a tool like dbConsole at their immediate=20 disposal from the very beginning. =20 > Data is in 4GL format and is saved into a directory=20 > inside the GCI directory. I think you're right because in the dbConsole snapshot on=20 their website they show a window that allows the user to=20 define the database field lengths, and from my=20 understanding there is no need to define field lengths in a=20 RAM-centric db. It would be interesting to see how their=20 4GL database searches compare in terms of speed with=20 WebDNA's flat file database system. If the 4GL system is=20 disk based then at least it won't run into RAM limitations. > In some ways it seems similar to WebDNA, and=20 > they seem to generate a lot of revenue by=20 > undermining their developers and selling=20 > applications as stand-alone products.=20 I don't see this as undermining their developers. There's=20 nothing to stop their developers from producing different=20 and perhaps better solutions -- customized for specific=20 industries for example, or simpler and lower cost solutions=20 that would capture a higher volume of low-end buyers at=20 lower price points. =46rom my current perspective Aestiva seem to support their=20 developers quite effectively in some ways that are=20 critically important. For one thing, they are insuring=20 that their developers can easily create and bundle their=20 own products in such a way that their products will=20 actually *install and run* on practically any server ... I still cannot use WebDNA on my desktop computer because=20 there is no version available for my OS, or if there is I=20 cannot find it. I cannot run WebDNA in my $5 per month=20 shared web hosting account either. I've had these same=20 problems for years. This makes WebDNA feel like a rather=20 unfriendly solution to me. Of course this is just a=20 leftover problem created by the previous owners so=20 hopefully things will change soon.=20 I have always dreamed of a self-contained WebDNA package=20 (like XXAMP) that includes a web server and email sender=20 along with WebDNA itself, already pre-configured and ready=20 to run the moment it is installed. If nothing else this=20 would make a user's initial experience with WebDNA much=20 more friendly and inviting. Sincerely, Ken Grome Associated Messages, from the most recent to the oldest:
