If you do it on the server, make a copy of the current database edit the back-up and when done move the online one to another folder, rename the duplicate to the real name and flush or commit the databases in the webcatadmin. The reason to keep the original is in case you screw up you can quickly replace the messed up database back to the one that did work before you started the edited.
