texte = By now, you have seen a glimpse of what we have planned for WebDNA 5.0 at http://www.smithmicro.com/iss/webdna5preview.tplAside from providing a superior web development solution with exceptional technical advances, a goal of this release is to make adjustments to the positioning of the WebDNA line that result in greater acceptance and usability. Most of these changes come as a result of feedback gathered here on this list. Here is the WebDNA 5.0 lineup with notes that address these changes as well as comments from earlier today on this list.Developer Edition 5.0. Developer Edition is positioned as the build and test platform to design web solutions with. The 5.0 release will include the IDE lab, and the Web Services Wizard with related WSDL extensions, allowing you to quickly build applications that consume web services. It is essentially the Enterprise Edition limited to 3 threads, so you can build and test the most robust WebDNA solution, then purchase the appropriate license to deploy. You may have noticed that we are giving Developer Edition away for free. This is a test of a proposed seed program designed to get WebDNA into the hands of new developers. We are currently running several marketing campaigns that drive new traffic to the Developer Resource Center to get a free copy. (The response is quite high!)Partner Edition. This is positioned as the basic business application license for deployment. If you created with Developer Edition an application that does not require commerce tags and does not require the CMS or WSDL capabilities of Enterprise Edition, then Partner Edition is the license to buy. There are no thread limitations in the 5.0 release. The Partner Edition is a one-website license appropriate for a single web site. More on this below.Commerce Edition. Still the commerce solution choice for deploying basic commerce solutions that you are all familiar with. The 5.0 release will contain XML support, XSLT translation support and all of the other extension mentioned in the preview document. It will also include the IDE lab. There are no thread limitations. Commerce Edition 5.0 is also a single-website license.Enterprise Edition. This license allows you to deploy the most advanced web solutions. The content management capability is extremely flexible and intuitive, and the Web Services Wizard makes short work of what would normally be many hours of painful coding. The Enterprise Edition is an unlimited website license. The preview document goes into much more detail than I will in this summary.Intranet Edition. This is a complete drop-in Intranet solution. No other license is required. It is based on Commerce Edition 4.5, so a web store can be built if needed. Note that Intranet Edition is not yet updated for 5.0.So here's the lowdown on website-based pricing and the ISP sandbox. The ISP sandbox is essentially a security feature. If you have multiple websites hosted on a single server, you can isolate each site in its own secure folder. All administrative settings, databases, trigger definitions, etc, related to that site would be protected. While Enterprise Edition is an unlimited website license, the default for Developer, Partner and Commerce Editions is one website. This allows us to provide a lower cost of entry into WebDNA while maintaining flexibility. (References to domains in the preview document will be updated to websites, which is a more accurate term.) Additional website add-ons may be easily added at a reasonable price. When adding website add-ons to the WebDNA license, a new serial number is created that is dependant upon the original one. Merely adding the new serial number into the admin will add the number of website add-ons purchased. Obviously, someone currently hosting dozens or hundreds of websites on a single WebDNA license will want to consider Enterprise Edition; in addition to being able to host any number of websites, each one can be sandboxed, delivering greater value and security to the customer. I hope this addresses the questions from earlier today. I have included my direct line in the signature below- do not hesitate calling me direct with comments or concerns! My desire is the same as yours- use WebDNA to help build a more profitable business. We will accomplish this by positioning WebDNA as a VERY scalable solution, get it into the hands of developers everywhere, evangelize the cost benefits of WebDNA, and provide a low enough entry point.Your comments are encouraged.
