On a new server I use Panther Server, but still tweak some things by hand. But on the busiest server, I just do it all by hand. Configuration files can be very unforgiving if you get the syntax wrong. But it can also be very simple and powerful. Itools just plain did some things wrong and couldn't do many other things. It's great for basic configuration with a few domains, but I have hundreds of domains to work with. So I bought a few different books on Apache and look up oddball problems on the net. Anything you want to do with Apache has already been done by someone else and five other people have written about it. There are many modules that can do amazing things. For instance I used mod_rewrite to change database store links from dynamic to static (in appearance only) this -- http://www.byphone.fireplacesnow.com/_subcategory_/*Propane%20Gas%20B-Vent%2 0Fireplace%20Systems/Multi-Sided%20Bay%20Units/ -- is a database page. Search engines love links like this. They index them and your site improves its ranking.....
