One of my design concerns is maximizing datatable overlap with POS/OE (by EES), a back-end order fulfillment/inventory/accounting system written in 4D. They have a short description field that is limited to 40 characters (they also have a longer paragraph style description field that will be used for the greater detail section). The 40 characters is not long enough to fit in all brand and option information for all items to be carried. If I separate off general fields like brand and remove the redundant information from the short description field, will I be taking a major performance hit for searching two or three data fields (ie brand, category of inventory, description) instead of one? The inventory offered will be very large (over 100K items) eventually. The priority is for a novice searcher to enter a keyword that is general or specific (ie 'monitor' or '17 NEC') and get good results.
