Search a date field specificly the month only...

Do I have to have idendendent fiels for month & year?eqeventmonthdata=[form.eventmonth]&eqeventyeardata=[form.eventyear] such as this...Or is there a way to have just an eventdate field and search on it?I know you can pull the month out [date %m] however I can't see how to do this in a search....
