G4 Mac OS X server, webcatalogThe important thing is how you build your appliction. You can build an application, and I proved it, that simply takes too long to do its job, and yet it does the same thing as another application built the right way that takes 1/10th the time. So the way you build you application is very important. You could wind up crushing your server over a poorly written application. In the scenario above NT has the advantage and the main reason is that it is multiprocessor capable. MacOSX will soon be multi processor scalable so the advantage won't be for long.We had an application that simply wouldn't sustain heavy hits on a mac without a daily restart. Moved it to an NT dual pentium II 400 and after testing of sustained users of 20,000 Webcatalog Intensive page hits per hour for 4 hours continuos, this maxed out the processor and the dbserver was taking 97 percent of it with the webserver and system processes taking the other. That was a dual processor. We have now moved the application to a Dell 6300 running 4 550mhz pentium III xeon processors with 2MB of backside cache. I will let you know how it performs. We are also codeveloping on MacOS-X. I personally think this is an awesome platform, you really have the best of all worlds, but I have not had a chance to really test it yet, we have only just gotten started.
