I have routines that let my clients export there order data from a .db file to a .csv file and then they can download them right through the browser client.You could even set it up that the ssl server would allow the downloading of .db files while the regular server does not. Its really up to you how you handle it, but there is no reason you cannot have them download via the browser and an authenticated https link.
