At the same time they are abandoning their support for the server OS I've been happily using for years without any problems. These major changes have forced me to consider a change in my business model as well ...If I do not run my own servers anymore, I have no use for an upgrade. Instead, my new HOSTING SERVICE will be the one to upgrade. I can just buy my hosting service from someone who specializes in running webdna-enabled servers -- and who charges reasonable prices. This was not a great idea before, but now it's at least something to consider. In the past, the only way I could protect my sites from webdna hackers was to never let anyone else's webdna code on my servers -- or to check every line of code myself. But now there's a sandbox ...This new sandbox feature will *not* prevent someone's else's bad code from freezing or crashing the entire server. But at least the bad guys cannot hack my templates, include files, and db files. This little bit of extra protection may be enough for me to consider using someone else's hosting service from now on ...To me, it seems the rules we all used to live by have changed. Now I can easily see substantial benefits to NOT running my own server any more. For example:1- no more hardware to purchase, maintain or repair2- no more server management responsibilities or headaches3- hosting prices that are as low as (and possibly lower than) my former colocation fees4- no more webdna software upgrade expenses! So you see, when SMSI tripled their previously affordable upgrade prices this time (I say tripled because I failed to upgrade fast enough to meet their deadline, so now my upgrade price is probably going to be $1495 instead of only $995) -- they basically forced me to change my approach to this business.Instead of selling to all of us 'poor people' who can barely afford $500 for an upgrade, it now appears that SMSI will be losing a lot of upgrade revenue from us poor folks. So of course this means they have to make up for the lost revenues by promoting and selling their software to hosting services instead. Yet when you look at the direction they have decided to push this software, this is right where they are headed, right?Hosting services can put dozens of webdna sites on a single unlimited webdna license, so they can actually spread the cost of these webdna upgrades over many users. That's a lot better (for some of us) than being stuck with 100% of the $1000 or $1500 upgrade costs ourselves. So as things turn out, it seems I have no choice but to consider hosting my sites on someone else's server. And of course, it will be my new hosting service that decides which version of webdna they will buy, install, and let me use. And this is why I was so curious about webdna hosting services that have already (or plan to) upgrade to v5 ...I believe that Charles Kline is a very wise person to ask how many of us would be interested in WebDNA v5 hosting were it made available. Charles, personally I believe this may be the PERFECT TIME for someone like you to start a new hosting service based on webdna v5 -- a service that caters to those of us who may want to upgrade but who can no longer afford it on our own.Maybe if I were in the USA and if I had the money, I would set up a webdna hosting service myself -- but I'm not and I don't -- so more power to you, Charles, and to everyone else who is thinking about offering v5 hosting services!:) -- Sincerely, Kenneth GromePS: My email address is kengrome@softhome.net until further notice.------------------------------------------------------------- This message is sent to you because you are subscribed to the mailing list .
