texte = Just a bit of logic I thought I would share. When asked recently to modify one of the stores to 'track' sales in regardsto specific partners referring them from other web sites I played with allsort of options including cookies, cart header settings, aliaseddirectories, etc. However all the options had one significant flaw or another:Cookies - flaw was compatibility and failure rates due to end usersCART Header - seemed to be an issue as setting a header caused a cart to bewritten even if they were just wandering the site... Didn't like the file IOflaw hereAliased Directory - Flaw was obvious... Too much damn work and difficult tokeep up with! Then the obvious solution hit me, almost to my embarrassment since I didn'tthink of it first...The way it is going to work (already in use in a limited fashion now), isthat each partner (affiliate) will be assigned a 5 digit, alpha-numeric,code. This will be an automatic signup with not human intervention needed(on this end)Now each affiliate is given a code snippet that they can point people towhen referencing the site. Essentially this snippet points them to aaffiliate page which does little more than take the affiliate number (passedin the url), sets the cart equal to cart=[AFID]-[cart]>From that point it's all a matter of interface. Carts can easily beidentified and separated first based on the logic of [cart]^- and thenfurther associated with the specific partner based on characters up to the -in the cart number.Initial testing confirms no issues in carts assigned this way, and opens upall sorts of possibilities such as:% calculations based on total salesIdentifying top affiliates through total comparisonsPrice breaks (discounts) based on established % setting in Partner DatabaseIndividual Affiliate order tracking and reporting with affiliate access tostatsIncreased demographic profiling through the categorization of affiliatesites and the direct connection to online customersEtc.Anyway, this may be obvious to some of you but I though the idea might proveto be useful to others:-) enjoyAlexAlex J McCombie New World MediaChief Information Officer Drawer 607888/892.6379 Fair Haven, NY 13064Alex@NewWorldMedia.com http://OurClients.comInterface Designer WebDNA Programmer Database Designer-------------------------------------------------------------This message is sent to you because you are subscribed to the mailing list
