We had a long standing and very intermittent problem with mostly Mac clients (though others as well), where the cart would get changed when switching between http: and https: links. We wound up rewriting our code to stop using cookies once we switched to SSL and never had a problem again. I'm not saying this is your problem (it probably isn't), just that it was the browser was not behaving consistently and it took a long time to track down the problem.
