db not being written to disk

I have had this happened to me on a few occasions: The power would go out beyond the capacity of our power backups so I would initiate a shutdown of all my servers. When I power up the Website Server the data within the db's prior to shutdown reverts back to an older version. It seems like the db's are not being written to disk or periodically are being written to disk. Should I be committing my databases every time I do an [append]?
