You can do a lot of neat things with it and it is very flexible. When you install it, you have a blank slate, ready for you to develop your system. You can download someone else's code and run it, but it will be of unknown quality (remember that you get what you pay for). WebCatalog is a turnkey e-commerce application, which just so happens to also includes a development environment. You can install it, add some data, and you are up and running. You can also use WebCatalog as a framework for your own development, using its built-in features in new and exciting ways. These are two completely different concepts. If you want to use PHP, feel free! There is no need to bring it up here, like there is something wrong with WebCatalog because it costs money. In fact, if you are offended that WebCatalog is (by some measures) an expensive package, I strongly urge you to go develop your own e-commerce application in PHP. Only after you have struggled to replicate the many built-in capabilities of WebDNA will you appreciate it for what it is.
