One cookie is a permanent cookie that knows they are in the database, and it displays the login link (which becomes a logout link if the second cookie is set). The second cookie is their own cookie that either expires after 30 minutes or stays put for a year, depending on their choice. I use a database I create just for this purpose (resides in the Globals folder) and use it on all my sites. I also use their unique cookie to display an editing link to any of their content that's editable by them.
