It finally turned out to be the default document was not set so instead of giving the not authorized page, it kept trying to Authenticate for some reason. As soon as I put the correct default document, it went away. When I start getting the erroneous error messages, users are unable to login to [protect]'ed pages using known good username/password combos - the authenticate dialog box continues to reappear regardless. After restarting the WebDNA process (./WebCatalogCtl stop|start), everything goes back to normal. Any thoughts? I had a strange problem similar to yours one time that drove me crazy. It finally turned out to be the default document was not set so instead of giving the not authorized page, it kept trying to Authenticate for some reason. As soon as I put the correct default document, it went away.
