I had log in issues with both IE 6 and Opera 7.x on Win2k (with SP2 as localhost) and also on the live server which is running some flavor of Linux I believe (I can confirm that later). I know on the localhost version, I would have multiple cookies covering localhost and if the wrong one was the last used, I needed to kill that cookie, which makes sense. I'm not sure how the same thing happens on the production server though. I've had a couple of people indicate that once they tried to log in, all they saw was a blank page (similar case) and for each person, the answer was to hit the log out page and then log back in. I believe that each of these persons were current members though and not new visitors. So, this all may or may not be of use to you - thought I'd throw it out there though.
