For example, a project Iam currently working on involves a catalog.txt file that supports thesearching and tracking of music by genres, as well as requiring a uniqueidentifier for each product (in this case cd's). We created a unique seriesof sku numbers in FMPro that identified the genre, gave a uniqueidentifier, and allowed us to maintain seperate databases outside of thecatalog.txt file while still enabling us to use append, replace, and deletefunctions when necessary. This concept also allows you to use mathematical search parameters joinedwith keyword search functions. While this does mean that the catalog.txt file is a merged series offormerly seperate databases, it is easily sorted and updated by sku, and isexportable to and importable from a seperate database program withouthaving to stop the WebCatalog program from running (at least not for verylong). The coolest thing about this simple solution (other than the cost savings)is that you can apply it to other functions within your site, such ascreating an online registration form that accesses a predetermine sku set.We use it to collect information and (when we get around to it) providecustomized pages for people touring our site. You could probably do a lotmore with it. And you could definitely save a field for something moreimportant like...?
