Creating main- and sub-category search

I want to create a main categorylist and then a sub category list to click on that would then take youto a Results page. In the database template I would like a [category]and a [sub-category] tag. I read all through the manual and triedseveral different coding things on the Search page but I can't seem tofigure it out.
