After having our own hardware both onsite and in a datacenter I have = been given a new lease on life by not having to deal with any of that = now by using cloud services. I won=E2=80=99t even have a dev box in the office anymore, it is far = cheaper and easier to pay a 3rd party $5 a month to have a development = server than it is to have something in a rack taking up space & power in = the office. All we have now is 2 NAS boxes in the office plus 20+ servers with = Amazon, Linode, Digital Ocean & Nexcess. The system we have built at = Amazon we could never replicate with our own hardware and be financially = viable, or for that case have the technical expertise to maintain. No = need to carry spare HDs or other circuitry, no need for a network = engineer, no more call outs to deal with hardware issues at 11:30pm on = Christmas night after a hard day or partying. I can even administer = servers from 30,000+ feet in an aeroplane these days. And when the = hardware fails, it is already running seamlessly on another instance and = I get an email telling me about it when I wake up. Then the other factors that come in - electricity redundancy, internet = connection redundancy, cooling & fire retardant systems, noice control - = not my concern anymore ! If you are wondering why Apple Server is changing all the time, you = probably need to ask yourself if Apple really care about a product that = is very quickly becoming obsolete - that is unless you are still looking = for a pay phone because you don=E2=80=99t think that cell phones will = ever take off.
