Performance of databases (especially acgi-calls) are faster without AppleScript. Nobody could us tell yet why this occures, but our stopwatch tells the truth... Second - AppleScript is a security leak. If the webmaster is not very very careful with setup or does not check the presence of unallowed scripts in the customers folders than you are in danger - we all know the power of AppleScript on finder level (and don't forget, errors pop up on your server). > There are many functions that a MAc webmaster may needd to perform that simply > cannot perform without AppleScript. I know that the growing program itself is the most important thing for a programmer and admin interfaces are something like orphans, they usually get done at the end of the job... ;-) BTW, many thanks to PCS - a few months ago we needed the new WebCat plugin without AppleScript and we got it within hours! > 1- WebCatalog needs AppleScript to send AppleEvents to other applications. > 2- WebCatalog duplicates very few of the tasks AppleScript can perform. > 3- There are many tasks AppleScript can perform that WebCatalog cannot. And one more fact: Timbuktu 4 does not run without AppleScript and Farallon is not willing to change that in the near future. Tell me why - Timbuktu runs under Windows either... If you ever switch to WebTen I think you will be more afraid of running some uncontrolled applications. You can perform nearly all tasks you need with built-in functions of good applications and some valuable little helpers. Of course, we run servers on Mac, Linux and NT - therefore my point of view can be different. We tend to use Perl and shell scripts rather than AppleScript and will remove the Windows server finally to become more compatible between the platforms. To say it clearly: I am not against AppleScript, I like the possibilities it gives to Mac users. But on a webserver, hm, it's your decision...
