There are no loops (thank god) that cause this sort of thing. Its just some (man I wish I could say what I think here) person/company sending countless emails out to people with a large percentage bouncing back to the replyto address (my domain) because of spam filters, invalid delivery addresses, full mailboxes, etc. So in this way I don't think this is a DOS tactic... Its just spammers protecting themselves from the burden of bouncebacks by forging their replyto address. Mail server protocols need to be updated to check if the domain name of the replyto address is in the same net block as the sending mail server. That one thing alone would stop terabytes of useless (and often crippling) email spam traffic on the net daily. I did get a kick out of the advice on that page though: ====================== - Refrain from using Email Auto-Responses. LOL... That's like saying avoid eating cookies if you car starts pull to the left. ====================== - Configure Mail Client Software to respond to any one email address only once. LOL... Another one because anyone that has setup autorepsonders (which we wouldn't be crazy enough to use) knows that every subsequent reply is a different messageID... It's about as stateless as HTTP. ====================== - SMTP servers should be configured to only allow connections from users of a known IP-Range. The best one yet.... Setup your mail server to only allow incoming mail from IP ranges you know in advance. Everyone else should call you on the phone... ====================== Hehe.. Thanks Sal... At least I got a smile today ;-) Alex Alex J McCombie New World Media Chief Information Officer Box 124 888/892.6379 MartVille, NY 13111 Alex@NewWorldMedia.com http://OurClients.com Interface Designer WebDNA Programmer Database Designer ------------------------------------------------------------- This message is sent to you because you are subscribed to the mailing list .
