FWIW, most barcode readers simply shim into the keyboard and just appear (to your application) to be someone typing very fast (and accurately). As far as generating barcodes, there are a number of barcode fonts available (depends mostly on your printer). Tell us more what you want to accomplish and you may get some better responses...
