I have done some sites where you do a jump menu upon color selection.. which initiates a search for the sizes available in that product and color. ...Works just fine. My latest preferred solution to this issue is to pre-populate a JS array with the data I need (similar to what it looks like your PHP code is doing). This makes the color / size selections and image changes very quick (client side). Notice the SKU format in your code... I've found that a SKU format similar to what they have is essential to the store. If you are working on an existing store that is not set up with a SKU format that incorporates a common ID, Size, and color, you may have a hard time with the "find product SKU" philosophy.
