texte = My humble 2 cents worth, So far over the many years, WebDNA DB have served us well and has never failed us. As large as 32MB file size with 80,000 records and serving the needs of an SME with 120 terminals accessing it 24/7 ....WEBDNA has not even burped once. What we have learnt over the years is to structure the DB well with sound relational links (better to have more smaller DBs than 1 large DB) and WebDNA will cause pigs to fly ....;-) For report generation purposes, we work offline using WebDNA on a back-up cum report generation server. That way, we do not hog resources on the primary WebDNA server. So far, so good ...correction ...DAMN good. Considered going to MySQL and in fact had a team address it early this year. After much effort, the entire team voted to stay with WebDNA DB. Guess I would be in the camp that is for all WebDNA DB development and support. ODBC would be great and having a plug-in / DLL / ODBC for WebDNA DB would be even cooler. We develop a lot of Flash applications that are combined with MDM Software to create standalone applications (works on Linux / Macs / PC). MDM supports ODBC and special plugins for various DB allowing Flash to work and play with it ....no fuss no pain. We work Flash with WebDNA using a different approach. How we wish that WebDNA DB is one of those supported plug-ins for Flash/MDM. How about what we affectionately call micro-DBserver. Client side downloadable WebDNA DBs that can operate locally on any machine. That way, we can have localized DBs running WebDNA dependent applications on a Cash Terminal for example and an SME with 120 terminals reporting to a central master WebDNA server for routine bulk uploads. The micro-DBserver feature will allow us to keep terminals running and operating even if the intranet or internet is down. Now we rely on the master server only. Ah ...I am rambling. Sorry ...I am for WebDNA DB all the way. It has not failed us yet and god knows, my people love it. It takes the KISS principle seriously and I am for improving it further rather than depending on licensed Oracle task masters. Oracle always tends to bloat their software and make things difficult for the less informed or capable. We would like to know how many of you need MySQL support and the reason why you prefer using MySQL instead of the internal database system. As you know, MySQL now belongs to Oracle with license restrictions and we were thinking, in case external database support is necessary, if a better/faster ODBC support woud not be a more universal idea. We also gave SQLite a thought, but despite its qualities, the internal WebDNA database system is more powerful. This is not a trivial matter, so we will listen to everyone. thank you! - chris--------------------------------------------------------- Associated Messages, from the most recent to the oldest:
