I >couldn't beat Smith-Micro's estimated time to develop...but what's this >going to lead to in my future? Folks, I think it's time for all of us to 'wake up' and pay attention to what is really going on here ...SM has clearly decided to go into direct competition with the people they sell their software to, that much is clear and undisputable at this point in time.SM seems intent upon using their own software, and their position in the market, to grab as much webcatalog consulting and hosting business as they possibly can. And every time they grab a new client, it is a client they COULD HAVE referred to one of us -- but instead they have kept that client for themselves because their business is not only 'software development' , it is also 'site development and hosting'.The new WebCatalog Builder software package they released last month looks like the 'key' to SM's efforts to build up their site development and hosting business. If you check the home page at webcatalogbuilder.com, you will see that WebCatalog Builder is clearly designed to funnel as many people as possible to SM -- so they can build and host webcatalog sites -- in direct competition with us.This seems like a conflict of interest if you ask me. Now the firm that sells us our software is ALSO underselling our service rates and competing with us. Does this seem like a good thing for them to be doing to us? If SM had any integrity, they would either sell software or provide site development and hosting services -- BUT NOT BOTH !!!To develop and sell software is one thing, but to use that very same software to gain an unfair competitive advantage over your customers is just plain wrong. Here it is in black and white from their own website at webcatalogbuilder.com:[start text]Host Your Site With US! And you would be a fool to deceive yourself into believing that they would never do such a thing ...They certainly have this option, and I fully expect as much if it begins to look like their development and hosting business is becoming more valuable than just selling software. If this happens, we will never see another new feature or bug fix again, and we will be forever stuck with the current version while they continue to improve their in-house version, thus making ours less and less competitive in the market.Good luck to everyone ...
