It seems as though the few times that I have resorted to the archives, it has turned out to be nothing more than a waste of my time. Just like right now, you can't even get information beyond June. Chances are, the problem has existed since June, and if that is true... it should say something to SM that it hasn't even been noticed until recently. I agree whole-heartedly with having better documentation, whether it is online or in hand. Right now, other than Donovan's offer to post it for download, the WebMerchant docs seems to be non-existent.I really like the idea of having the tags and contexts better defined in some type of interactive database, but I'm not so sure that I would like to have people continuously posting information to each page. It seems as though that could come to be as cumbersome as the archives are now. Perhaps you could have a page with the standard (more extensive) tag information then include links to things such as Examples Using Tag, Discussions About This Tag, Ask A Question About This Tag, etc. etc. I also think it would be tremendously useful to have discussions and code examples separated into categories... similar to At A Glance in the existing docs.Since I'm dreaming... I would love to have talk-lists that were divided into groups, i.e. Beginner and Advanced, possibly Server Admin. I'm not a server admin, so many times I have to copy and paste an entire thread to my server admin just so that he may be able to help me solve a problem that exists with WebCat. Why would he want to subscribe to this list and receive such a tremendous amount of information about coding? And personally, I get lost when everyone starts talking about issues that are related to server admin. Heck, you could go so far as to have Server Admin discussions divided into categories by OS.One more thing: The Tea Room. Well, perhaps in the day it was useful (however I never felt like browsing through the HTML) but now I would say it may be a bit dated. People are shopping differently now and stores are built with many more features than the simple purchase of a product. I would love to see an extensive Tea Room without images... or at most VERY FEW. Product images perhaps, but few if any graphics.I will venture to say that SM has probably not grown their support due to the expense. I don't know the cost of putting together such a successful support package with staff included. But I do know that it is the #1 sales tool when it comes to developers. At least this developer. Just my opinion.-----Original Message----- From: WebCatalog Talk [mailto:WebDNA-Talk@talk.smithmicro.com]On Behalf Of Gary Krockover Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2002 11:13 PM To: WebCatalog Talk Subject: Re: Hyperlink in emailI started (very early stages) to write (if even for just my own personal use) a form of the online doc's that could have notes appended to each page (ala the doc's on php.net). Simple concept, an append to a database that is associated by pagename. The one page in the current docs that has the multiple tags on it has to be split into individual pages, but it's just a big cut-n-paste job.My point is, I don't understand why SMSI hasn't implemented this simple form of the online docs. It would be great to post corrections, snippets, comments, gotcha's, etc for every tag.Reading the info on php.net, I gather that anyone can post a note to a page, and someone that maintains that site polices it every now and then for bogus information. This might be what's keeping SMSI from adding such a feature. Also, they might argue that that's what the archive list is for. But the counter-point is: it's a pain to look up a tag, not find the information (or example) that you want, and then have to go dig through the archives in hopes of finding that information.I dunno, I'd like to hear your all's comments on this.GK> >on 9/12/02 5:13 PM, Paul at paul@ast.jagrove.com so noted... > > > >> Is there an easy way to send html emails with webcat and its emailer? > > > >There should be a link on the archive search page *just* for this topic. > >: ) > > Actually, the archives should be the place where SMSI *employees* go > to collect the information that has been discussed several times -- > information that, if placed in the HTML docs, would help people to > write their webdna properly WITHOUT having to resort to searching the > list archives. > > This software has been around for 5+ years already ... so why is it > that the HTML docs still have so FEW practical or useful webdna > coding examples in it? > > Everyone seems to think that the answer is to send people to the > archives, but I think the answer is BETTER DOCUMENTATION -- with > practical webdna coding examples copied directly from the archives > and placed into the docs so everyone can find and use them > immediately -- instead of being sent to the archives every time the > docs are deficient. > > > Sincerely, > Kenneth Grome ------------------------------------------------------------- This message is sent to you because you are subscribed to the mailing list .
