texte = I Think I suggested the same thing a few years ago.  The fact is that SMI puts a lot of man hours into development and they simply can't afford to give the language away for free.  I understand that entirely and I don't hold it against them.

However you just gave me another thought that SMI might want to consider.  If SMI starts to split their products for different markets they might want to consider creating a free version that is very stripped down in functions.  Perhaps something that supports showif, hideif, text and math variables, sendmail and a few other simple tags.  Honestly all of my web site customers use the sendmail tag now to submit forms rather than having a long perl or php script.

Maybe SMI should look at the most commonly used scripts in the php and perl world and create a WebCatEngine designed to compete with those directly. We all know that once you get hooked on this language you want to do more.

I suppose my point is that the development fee for old tags like the ones I've mentioned should have been recouped by now, so why not let ISPs install those script engines for free?

As for a book, I'd be willing to write one on my own if I had the time.  But even after 5 years of development I don't feel I'm qualified to write anything more than a "dummies" book.
