Not!Did Phil come out to your rickety shack and say Claude, if you don't pay up, I'm going to delete your WebCatalog 4.x code or what? No one is suggesting that you _have_ to upgrade. It's clear that think you cannot afford to upgrade now, and maybe not ever. That's an unfortunate truth, that some people will be left behind (like the poor unwashed fools still running 3.x). You can continue to use your existing license forever; there is no clock ticking. You just won't get the newest features, and probably at some point you won't even be getting any bugfixes with the now abandoned earlier versions.I want SMSI to continue to develop WebCat for the *professional market*, and as such, I expect them to invest significant expenses in supporting the current version and developing the next version. For my part, I will pay what I think is a more than reasonable cost to stay current (although I am actually upgrading to the top of the line package because it fits my needs).I had an offline conversation with Doug and Phil about the pricing structure and they went beyond what I suggested to accomodate the existing customer base. Price point analysis is a black art; there is no question that you can sell more units at a lower cost. But the reality of software development is that the invisible (to the outside world) development costs have to be paid back before the next version can be financed. Another feature of software development is the issue of support costs, which rise with the number of users. This is one reason why many software companies go for the $$$$ upfront and $$ per year for maintenance. So, I urge you to continue using WebCat 4.x if you want, and move to open source if you want. But if you think you're working hard now, you have no idea how much harder it will be to build your own codebase (or integrate someone elses) using open source - supposedly free - software.TANSTAAFL http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/t/TANSTAAFL.htmlJohn -- John Peacock Director of Information Research and Technology Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group 4501 Forbes Boulevard Suite H Lanham, MD 20706 301-459-3366 x.5010 fax 301-429-5748 ------------------------------------------------------------- This message is sent to you because you are subscribed to the mailing list .
