Not an issue: The first time you use a Linux-based LiveCD it maps out some memory as a virtual hard drive and it writes file changes to that memory. At session end it asks where you want your changes stored, and if you don't want to wait you can force write your changes to disk or USB before session end. Next startup and every time thereafter -- if the same hardware is found -- it load the changes on top of the CD-based files, saves to disk throughout the session to prevent data loss, and saves to disk again at session end. In other words, it's a completely transparent system after the first run provided you always use the same data storage devices, which is why a USB thumb drive is a good mate for a LiveCD -- they are both portable and can easily travel together. > You will also need to get around people who's computer > doesn't boot in the order you need (ie 1. Floppy, 2. CD, > 3. HDD) or have turned off CD booting in their BIOS. Yes, but nearly all computers these days try to boot from CD before HD by default and most people never change this ... and those who do usually remember how to change it back so I really don't see this as being a huge problem. > As WebDNA was originally a Mac product (the reason I > started with WebDNA), what about a Mac version. LiveCD's run on Intel-based Mac's now. For all I know they may also run on non-Intel Macs but I have never tried it myself. > It all sounds great Ken, I am just glad I will not be > manning the Help Desk ! Oh you will be! What do you think this talk list is for? :) I'm not suggesting that there will be zero problems here, but for crying out loud, if you want to get this software into people's hands any time soon you have to define a marketing campaign and get going on it. Fixing bugs is a totally different issue, and it's an easy thing when you're a programmer to retreat into your comfortable "office cave" and try to find and squash all the bad little critters that live in your software rather than confront the bigger business issues. Basically I'm concerned about this, and I'm proposing a marketing concept that IMHO just might "take off" once it hits critical mass. I would simply like to see this software get into the hands of people who can stick a CD into their computers and within 5 minutes be typing [time] and [date] and watching how cool it is to see those tags converted to the expected values right before their eyes -- and right on their own computers at that! This is what I think is really going to sell WebDNA to the masses, and that's why I like this approach so much ... :) Sincerely, Ken Grome Associated Messages, from the most recent to the oldest:
