Because security can not be achieved through obscurity, but only through strong algorithms, protocols, and strong keys. In the real world, if they have the object code and access to the processor, the encryption can be studied and reverse compiled anyway, so the basic math of the algorithm is open without much effort. Its easy enough to get license favorable (free) symetric encryption source for strong, peer reviewed and researched algorithms (Blowfish, CAST, etc., strong enough to be recognized as STRONG by the Bureau of Export Administration in the U.S. so strong enough for most ecommerce db needs :-) The only hard part in the past was government regulations that made it harder to sell products with encryption. So, use a non-secure scramble and not deal with government restrictions... much easier, right? Not if you want to secure your data.In the U.S. those regulations just got a bit friendlier...Asymetric encryption (used in PGP, SSL protocols, and other public key stuff) is not so easy to come by in terms of cost for licensing, etc. But it's easier to protect your keys, since one is used for encrypting and a different one for decrypting.David Dantowitz -- DC&R-------------------------------------------------------------Brought to you by CommuniGate Pro - The Buzz Word Compliant Messaging Server. To end your Mail problems go to
